Antibiotic Stewardship

Bacterial resistance to antimicrobials is recognised by the WHO as a major health threat of the 21st century.

With the pipeline of new antimicrobials close to empty, it is increasingly important to use the drugs that we do have in an effective manner. The concept of antimicrobial stewardship deals with pragmatic use of our available resources in order to preserve the effectiveness of current antimicrobials for future generations.

Treat Steward, which began as a research project within the MMDS group, provides a combined tool for antimicrobial stewardship and clinical decision support, advising on the optimal course of antimicrobial treatment to maximise covering treatment while reducing costs, including that of the spread of resistance.
