Pandemic: 28% loss on players’ transfer value

The coronavirus pandemic is heavily impacting the football industry. Issue number 289 of the CIES Football  Observatory Weekly Post presents the gaps in the players’ estimated transfer value in the event that no matches will be played and no contracts will be extended until the end of June. As such, the total player transfer value at big-5 league level would decrease by 28%: from €32.7 to €23.4 billion. See the issue here.

Postponement of The European Association Sociology of Sport Annual Conference

It is with great regret to inform you that the EASS 2020 Conference with the topic: Sport, Diversity and Social Change has to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Executive Board of the EASS, have agreed that the best course of action is to postpone the conference for a year. As such, they are provisionally planning to welcome you to Solent University between the 17 and 20 May 2021. Given that participants’ research will inevitably move on in the coming months, a new call for papers in the autumn will be issued.

Documentaries

Documentaries on racism and antisemitism in football

Despite growing public attention and awareness among a number of supporter groups following ongoing incidents of racial abuse in European football, racism and other forms of discrimination continue to hit players in many leagues across the continent. Recently, two TV documentaries have highlighted players’ experiences of racism in British football as well as the rising influence of neo-Nazis and the spread of antisemitism in German football:
