My interest in sport migration is concerned with the role football academies in Ghana play among local communities. My PhD research asks what do local actors and communities mean when they say that academies can facilitate development. I seek to shed light on these academies as a site of emerging discourses and practices that reflect local agendas, local cultures, societies and resources. Most research on this subject has focused on the role that academies play in turning children into footballers and connecting them to global networks. My study offers a different perspective, which pays more attention to the social and cultural role that football academies play.
