The research and study environments at Department of Health Science and Technology have created several successful businesses and inventions over the years.

A strong tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship

At Department of Health Science and Technology, innovation and entrepreneurship have always played key roles in our everyday life. The list of innovation achievements counts approx. 60 patent applications, 120 reported inventions (of which 25 have been sold), and 20 spin-out companies. Acarix, which produces advanced medical measuring equipment to diagnose coronary artery disease, was e.g. founded in 2009 as a spin-off from Coloplast and Aalborg University. The company was listed on the Swedish Nasdaq exchange in 2016 with a value of SEK 421 million.

Our research environments are open to our students – this help them to see their opportunities within entrepreneurship and innovation. In their studies and project work, the students work with real-life health challenges of the society and search for possible solutions which may improve the public health in future.

Aalborg University Health Hub

An innovation environment, AAU Health Hub, has been established at thde Department of Health Science and Technology. Our Health Hub will become part of the Aalborg University Science and Innovation Hub (AAU SIH). AAU SIH is a strategic venture within research and innovation and is to serve as a state-of-the-art center with optimal physical settings covering incubator environments and laboratory facilities for interdisciplinary research – especially research where researchers and companies work together to solve large societal problems. AAU SIH is expected to open in 2022.

Examples of innovation and spin-out to the world

Acarix

When blood passes through the narrowed coronary arteries, an
abnormal sound pattern called a murmur arises. The murmur is an
important indicator of Coronary artery disease (CAD) that cannot be heard with a human ear or stethoscope. Therefore, the invention, CADScor®System, offers a remarkable help to health professionals – and, by short process of elimination, it has the potential to reduce waiting time for patients experiencing symptoms of CAD. Based on acoustic technology, the CADScor®System records the heart sounds of the patient, and in less than ten minutes, the result is shown as a calculated CAD-score.

AAU Pandemic Ventilator

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the research group RCare developed an emergency respirator - CoRescue - in collaboration with industrial partners. After the first respirator was built, the 'recipe' was shared with the world. The advantage of the emergency respirator is that it can be produced relatively easily and cheaply by industrial components which are in most cases - available everywhere in the world.
